Importing Family History CD
and Passage Express Projects

You can import projects that have been created with either Family History CD or Passage Express. This capability has many uses, including:
  • Make archive copies of your projects to help free up room on your hard drive.
You will be able to import them into Passage Express the next time you want to work on them.
  • Collaborate with others who have Passage Express. For example, you can pass a project to other family members of the extended family to contribute their part to a family project.
  • Make CD's or DVD's as backup copies of your projects to guard against a hard drive crash or other computer problems. Import them again when necessary.
  • Import your projects automatically that you have already created in Family History CD.

Here's how to do it.

On the main Passage Express menu, click on the
"Manage, Delete, Import, Etc." link.

Note: Importing a Family History CD project from CD is the recommended way to do it. Simply burn a CD of your Family History CD project, even if it is not complete. This technique will leave your Family History CD project as-is on your hard drive and the CD you made will act as a backup copy.

If you are importing from a CD or DVD, insert it into the CD-ROM drive now. It may take a few seconds for your computer to recognize that there is a CD in the drive. If it is a Family History CD or Passage Express project, then it will probably auto-run and try to run the project. You can just close it down.

On the window shown below, click on the Import button.

If you have inserted a CD or DVD project to import and if the computer has had time to recognize the CD or DVD in the drive, then you will see this message. Just click "Yes" to begin importing from your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. After it is done you can then select your imported project from the list of projects and click open to begin work. If you do not want to import a project from CD or DVD, click "No, for more import options."

Note: You cannot import a DVD-Video or CD-Video (SVCD, VCD) made for a DVD player.

Note: Using this method will convert your Family History CD projects into Passage Express projects and will make them unusable in Family History CD. If you use the CD method shown above, you will have access to your project through both Family History CD and Passage Express.

This window will allow you to browse for a folder that contains one or more projects. You may also browse and select your CD/DVD-ROM drive if you did not see the message box shown in the previous illustration. For this example, we will browse for our Family History CD projects that are stored on our hard drive. These are normally found on your C: drive. Browse to the C: drive, then to the "Program Files" folder, the "Family History CD" folder and then select the "Projects" folder. Click OK. Your list of projects that were contained in the "Projects" folder will be shown as seen below.

Here is a list of the projects that were found in the "Projects" folder in the previous step. You can now select the project you want to import and click on the "Import" button.

Your project will now show up in the projects list with a thumbnail image of the menu that you have designed (if one has already been created). If you import the same project more than once, be sure to rename the first one something slightly different as they will look identical on this screen and will be difficult to tell which one is which. Click on the project to select it and then on the "Open" button to open this project.
