I am still having a problem installing PE on my laptop. The laptop has no internet connection and runs Windows ME. At an early stage I did have PE2.0.16 installed, but no more.
I unstalled PE from the laptop and then restarted.
I have a CD made from the version I downloaded on Sept 13 and installed on this computer. I installed from the CD onto my laptop and was told that PE was installed. I have a PE icon on my monitor.
During the installation process I was asked for my name but was never asked for my license number.
I attempt to activate PE but get the message:
Run-time error '75':
Path/File access error

I have not the faintest clue otherwise.
I am hoping to take my laptop to a meeting Wednesday a.m. and demonstrate PE.
Help and guidance is requested.

Hello Bill,
This is an unusual error and we could use some more information. Did the error, Path/File access error, appear when you tried to click the 'Licensing' link? Knowing the last item entered or clicked before the error appeared, could help us narrow it down. You may have told me this previously, but did it also load as a 'Trial Version' and was it ever usable as such on your laptop?

Where it says it is an access error, you may try the following. In Windows Explorer (My Computer), right click on the Passage Express folder (C:\Program Files\Passage Express). A little menu will appear, choose 'Properties'. You should see an item on the properties window called 'Attributes'. It will probably say 'Read Only'. Uncheck this box, and then click 'Apply'. It will then ask if you want to 'Apply to this folder only' or 'Apply to this folder and all subfolders'. Choose 'Apply to this folder and to all subfolders and files' and click 'OK'. It will take a few seconds to apply the settings. Your Passage Express folder may still say 'Read-Only' if you check it again. That is fine. The files in that folder and the subfolders were the ones we were concerned about and this was an easy way to get them all. If it is truly an 'access' error, then this should clear it up.

Thanks for you help!

During the installation, I never had any kind of a window, linkage, whatever, about 'Licensing.' As I also state below, I have never been able to open PE on my laptop. I had an earlier version, 2.0.16?, but that is not avaialble now.

As above, I have not been able to open PE on the laptop.

Additionally, you wrote:

When I went to Properties, none of those 3 options were checked. But just as a bit of a trial, I did check Archive. I "Applied" it and tried it, and got the same error message. I then went back and removed that selection, leaving all 3 options blank, and again applied to all folders, files, etc., Applied. Tried to start again and again the same errot.

Decided on another shot at the situation in my laptop.
Uninstalled PE [using Add/Remove]
Then went to Windows Explorer and found that the folder for PE was present. Checked the Properties and found that it consisted of 938 files and 149 folders.
There were 6 first level sub-folders under PE and these were:
Image Designer
Imports
PrjFiles
Projects
Temp and
Updates
There were also 8 files directly under the PE folder. These were
args
axExplBar.dll
currentpgm.f
document
folderHistory
slideshow.pslid
updateFiles.f
updating.lck
[I may not have the extensions exactly correct. <G> Can't read some of my own writing.]
I decided to rename the PE folder [to PassageExpressA]
And reinstalled PE. Voila, it works. but Shocked it was PE 2.0.16.
But, it works, as 2.0.16, not 2.0.18.
I also checked the license and it is licensed to me, Bill Adams. [During installation, I was asked for User name and also was asked about installation and I chose Typical. I think those were the only 2 questions I was really asked.

I am now going to download whatever PE I can find at

http://www.passageexpress.com/download/PEDownload.php

and try again, to include renaming if that necessity comes up.

Hope the above may be of assistance to you.

Continuing. I downloaded PassageExpresssetup from

http://www.passageexpress.com/download/PEDownload.php

The size was 65,497 kb. Burned a CD. Went to my laptop.

Uninstalled PE [2.0.16] using Add/Remove [of Windows ME] After Uninstalling, checked back with ADD/Remove and the Passage Express folder was not present.
Used Windows Explorer and the Passage Express folder was still present. It contained 59 files, 22 folders, taking up 17.1 MB. Renamed this folder PassageExpressB. [The previous PassageExpressA folder was still present.]
Installed PE from the CD, 65,497 kb. Opened it and it works, as PE 2.0.18, with the new format.

However, there was one confusing item. Before this last Remove, etc., while still using 2.0.16, I made a Project and named it Test16. After installing 2.0.18, I can still open Test16, which I think must be in folder PassageExpressB ??

Now remember please, I am using my laptop which has no internet connection and has never had such a connection. So, this Windows ME has never been updated since I purchased it. And that could be a part of the problem.
Do hope this helps. But at least now, I can demonstrate Wednesday.
Kindness to all.

Terry

The demonstration went well. I did run into that bit of inconvenience of Starting a New Project and then needing to open it.
Oh, me and my trifocals and old fingers hit a wrong button once. Not uncommon and these people recognize me and my capabilities.
Glad I did it - also glad I found out the problems of Windows ME not really uninstalling older versions of a program.
Just one other note - non-PE so excuse me. People in this area are evacuating, not chancing s New Orleans Ordeal. Roads are heavily traveled now.
Kindness to all.

Bill,
Definitely go if you are in an area that's endangered!
We have a place on the Gulf coast of FL and have had to evacuate because of hurricanes a number of times. We don't hesitate and have sometimes even left before the evacuation order came through.
Take Care!

Thanks to you Loretta and to Terry
We are not evacuating. We are some 150 inland and NW from Galveston so we are not expecting heavy weather. Actually, I will be glad to get some rain - and stop my sprinkler system. But your prayers for those in the extreme SE part of Texas as well as continuing prayers for those who were devastated by Katrina are requested.
Kindness to all
