Terry, I have sent in my purchase form for Passage Express after reading info and your recommendation; along with other users comments. I'm looking forward to using the software, like a kid waiting for a special day.

Hi Kenny,
Loretta told me that someone from TN mentioned my name. I'm confident that you will find the program extremely useful.
There are so many really useful little bits right in the program. One thing I think is especially useful is the ability to create an .rtf file while you are already using the program. If you are making up something to send to someone and you realize that you missed putting in a page of text, you can just add it. If you are putting button on your front page for navigation, you can easily adjust the text up or down, left of right - however you think it should be. The face labels that you can put on the photographs also become searchable if you search the CD. What I've been doing is putting the caption with just first names, and then in the face labels I put the full name - or the reverse.
I have also put the .exe files created by XFlip into the project.
I have a button on one page for Flip Albums. You click on the files and then on open - so you can use much that you have already done.
Sorry to babble on - but there is a lot of new, good stuff.

I just received an e-mail But it wasn't the one I was hoping for, there is a delay in shipment, its been pushed back to July 12th.
I was so hoping to finish my project with the new program. Well, sometimes you loose, and sometimes you win. I am off to finish my project.
Later,

The wait will be worth it, all those extra goodies. Like others, I also have pre-ordered, and it is already the 11th here - 2 more sleeps to go while the other side of the world catches up

Hi Terry,
Are you saying that you have made a Front Page that can direct a viewer to a FlipAlbum which is on the same CD/DVD ? And have you been using Xflip for the whole package?
That is what I am looking for. I purchased the program this week and in fact am just taking a real good look at it. Unfortunately I loaded the demo disk but ended up working during the demo days and ended up not getting much time to get a good look at the depth of the program.
Scenerio.... I have a FA ready with 50 pictures. I'd like the Front Page to direct to FA. At the same time, I would like the Front Page to go to those same 50 pictures and allow the mouse over effect to happen along with voice recordings etc... Clear as mud yet ??
This is what I am hoping that the program will ultimately allow me to do.
Just FYI and hoping...
...Steve
PS.. Happy New Year !! |

Hi Steve,
I started a major preservation project with the earlier version of the software, Family History CD. There were a few booklets I needed to scan and present and it seemed the flip album would be ideal for them, but I had other types of files that I needed to incorporate into the same project.
I made the flip albums and then used the xflip program to make them self executing files. You can have a button on the front page that will link directly to that file. You could also take the same photos and put them in a folder within the Passage Express program and make use of the face labels and also the SEARCH possibilities.
I don't see any way to do both at the same time though. I think you'd have to duplicate the pictures, as those inside the xflipped album aren't accessible, but I don't know that for sure. The thing is, once you've prepared a folder with the photos you'll use in the flip album, it's easy enough to copy it and then put your face labels in too.
If the project gets TOO big, you can switch to a DVD disk instead of a CD - just make sure the person you are giving it to can also read the DVD disk on the computer.
I think you'll find there are some really great things inside this program. Many are understated and you just stumble upon them and realize how nice they are. The other thing that's good is that the developers listen to suggestions and try to work with the people who use the software.

What features do you find that are understated?

Hi Loretta,
I was thinking along the lines of the little color picker up thing that is so easy to select the precise color out of one of the components of the picture for the front page - and also to fill in the background screen around the menu. I like that you can elect to sort just a folder and then move the items around from there and they'll stay exactly where you want them.
Things like that - there are bunches of them.

I believe the Image Designer is a neat feature. It looks like a paint brush along the top toolbar of the Project Builder. A person can build neat picture collages with shapes, text and images blended into one. This can become part of the project, part of a slideshow, can be exported as a jpeg to take to a printer or e-mail to someone.
Our son had an Eagle court of honor. We made an image collage of him and then took the jpg copy of it to a photo printing store to blow up into an 8X10. We put that image in a frame which he used for his display.
A pretty neat feature that served our purposes very well.
