Well, if this don't melt the Wicked Witch ...

This is really a follow up on two previous threads ('Windows Media Player 10 Update' & 'Adding Items into a Folder - Deleting') that probably should have been combined to start with, but sometimes I don't know where I am going until I get here, so:

The "error" that I will refer to is an infinite loop recommendation to instal "Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime files" (that can be exited by clicking "No").

I first saw this error in PE with mpeg-2 files generated by InterVideo software.

So, not hearing much from anyone other than I am not the first person to see this error,

I installed (this is physically a new computer without much software yet loaded) Pinnacle's Studio 8.7.12 video editing software, generated a short 38 second video clip of my own video, and saved it in mpeg-2, mpeg-1, and avi formats.

WMP (Windows Media Player !0) played all three clips successfully.

I then imported the three clips into separate folders in PE 2.0.14.

The avi import caused another iteration of the error.

The two mpg files imported properly, and both were viewed successfully inside PE's Project Builder screen.

Why would PE trip over an avi file that runs fine in WMP?

Why would short Pinnacle mpg files run in PE while somewhat longer mpeg-2 files by InterVideo generate the error?

I know -- I'm testing AQ-PE imports -- but mine went so well that I was looking at what else the software could perhaps do (I think it's a lot of stuff) when this error popped up, and here we are ...

All with XP home sp2 updated, P4, Toshiba A75 laptop (my wife's).

Hi Bill,

I have done a bit of video importing and it has gone smoothly.
Most often I use ULead's video programs and sometimes Pinnacle's too.
"Video Codecs" is a subject I try to avoid knowing too much detail about, so if something works well, I just keep doing it.

I don't know if this will help or not, but early on I had a problem with some large (not video) files. Have you set the size of the disc to DVD rather than CD? .avi files can be giant.

Terry asked. "Have you set the size of the disc to DVD?"

That's a good thought, but yes, I have.

Any video file can be huge, but yes, avi is especially so. I don't know why anybody would use it except to put it directly back onto tape (ie, video fanatics and professionals).
