It would probably be useful to add gedcom import capability to the program at some future date, then everyone else with whatever software could also use the program's features (Reunion, BK, etc).

Or are there too many variables in how multimedia are attached to a gedcom?

Thanks for the suggestion! We'll look into it down the road a bit.

I've brought a basic gedcom file in and assigned a reader to it.

GedView is not fancy, but it lets me look at the basic outline of the family and also something I haven't seen elsewhere. It has the ability to track the DNA line either male (Y) or female (mitochondrial)

Our family is just starting along that line. Are there others that track the assumed DNA lines?

Gedview is a free download at

Edited for grammar!

Terry,
Thanks loads for the link to that GedCom viewer. It is so much better than the one by Mud Creek. I found it superb to say the least and have already linked it into Passage Express as a reader for CDs I build.

One of the great advantages of using Ancestral Quest is its ability to read Gedcom files. So if you are a AQ user you don't need the Genviewer program. This was on the first tests I did when Beta checking

Thanks Peter, I am a Legacy user not an AQ user. I find this Gedview great for checking any down loaded GedCom that I want to view instead of cluttering or messing up my Legacy database. Don

My preference is Brothers Keeper. I started with it back in the DOS days and though I've tried others, I've never found one that worked better for me.
One of the biggest things that keeps me loyal is the personal attention the developer puts into it and his responses to requests. I feel the same about Passage Express!

I guess we all use different programs to track our families. It's likely too that every one of the programs will have gedcom import ability, but sometimes that's more than we need. I'm currently doing more with pictures than with charts and such. If I use the face labels to identify the people in the old pictures, I might include a gedcom file - just in case someone wants to see how "so and so" fits into the big picture.
The little gedview is all I need for that. It's simple and fast and can be added as an EXTRA rather than the focus of a project.
